The Middle East has emerged as a reliable, competitive and sustainable supplier of sulfur to the world, and planned expansions in the region will account for around half of the expected global growth to 2030.
This is the observation of Abdulmunim Al Kindy, Adnoc Upstream Executive Director, at the Middle East Sulfur Conference (MEScon) 2023, saying: “MEScon demonstrates how, at Adnoc, we are making a major contribution to this growing market share. Currently , we are the world’s largest single exporter of sulfur, and as we grow natural gas across our portfolio, we will expand our supply of high-quality sulfur produced at a lower carbon intensity.
“This includes the expansion of the Shah gas plant and the delivery of the Ghasha concession, the world’s largest offshore sour gas project, in the second half of this century.”
The conference is hosted by Adnoc and organized by global commodity business intelligence company CRU and acid gas and sulfur specialist consultancy UniverSUL Consulting (UniverSUL).

Kicking off at the Conrad Hotel at Etihad Towers, Abu Dhabi, the four-day event brought together delegates dedicated to innovation sharing and best practice discussions, exploring the evolving role of sulfur in the Middle East and globally.
Led by experts from industry-leading companies related to the sulfur value chain, after an initial day of workshops and technical demonstrations, delegates gained perspective on the region through a welcome address by Al Kindy; Mohammed, Director, Operational Technical Support, Saudi Aramco Gas Abdulrhman Al Abdulqader; and Fahad Al Wahedi, Executive Director of MEScon, with global industry perspectives from CRU and UniverSUL.
During MEScon 2023, attendees will benefit from a series of panel discussions and spotlights from a variety of industry leaders covering the event’s key themes:

Peter Harrisson, lead analyst for sulfur and sulfuric acid at CRU, said: “We are at a critical moment when it comes to acid gases and sulfur. Demand for their end uses is growing – from fertilizers to stabilizing the global food supply to electric vehicle battery demand. However, the energy transition is also accelerating, meaning that the balance of supply and demand for sulfur is evolving in nature.
“Ensuring the industry is successfully prepared for the future is critical, and with the Middle East at the epicenter as a major global producer, events such as MEScon in Abu Dhabi provide the perfect platform to do so.”
