Midfield battle to be decided at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

[ad_1]

There is still a lot to be finalized for both rankings.

As we head into the season finale, there’s a lot to look forward to and celebrate. The biggest highlight was undoubtedly racing legend Sebastian Vettel’s final Formula 1 race. With him, the likes of Mick Schumacher, Daniel Ricciardo and Nicolas Latifi are also sure they won’t be part of the starting XI next year. Lewis even hosted a farewell dinner for his partner Vettel in honor of his amazing career. But all that aside, there are still plenty of fights that will get the final say on Sunday’s calendar.

The biggest of these battles was between Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez for second. They were all tied at 290 going into the weekend. Cecco was embroiled in a team-mate drama last week when Verstappen failed to return his place to him. Beyond that, the midfield has a couple of games to cheer for in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Alpine vs McLaren

McLaren’s double DNF in Brazil and a large number of points in the Alps put them 19 points clear of the British manufacturer. Despite having a reasonably quick car, the poor reliability of the Alpine resulted in them getting less points than they deserved.

The French manufacturer scored 167 compared to McLaren’s 148.

Alonso vs. Ocon

While Alpine hopes to end the season with P4 in the team, their two drivers will hope to end the partnership with each other gaining the upper hand. Throughout the season, Ocon and Alonso have been at each other’s throats and produced some nasty moments from a team-mate’s perspective. Alonso made comments like “only one game left” about his team-mates after coming together for the sprint race in Brazil last week.

Ocon, who is currently ranked eighth, leads Alonso by 5 points with 86 points. Both of them have produced some fantastic moments in the car this year, but Alonso has been the clear loser all season with points dropped due to reliability failures. So the tables and stats look harsh on the Spaniard.

Alfa Romeo and Aston Martin

While Aston Martin was the second most improved team in qualifying, Alfa Romeo has degraded the most over the past year. At the start of the season, Valtteri Bottas put the car together with Hamilton and Mercedes. This gives a real hope for a mid-table team that will make a big leap and challenge for the top 5-6. But it got worse over the year, and now they’re only as good as the P6. Bottas has scored points in each of the first seven races. He and Alfa Romeo had a pointless winning streak from the British GP to the US GP. Chinese rookie Zhou Guanyu scored points only twice.

And Aston Martin made steady gains in speed on Sunday. They have 50 points compared to Alfa Romeo’s 55 points.

Haas vs Alpha Tauri

On the further back grid, Haas (37) and Alpha Tauri (35) were separated by just two points. Both teams are looking for a P8 spot in the constructors’ championship. Remember, the difference in prize money between P8 and P9 is $2 million, which is a major boost for both of them.

This week, Haas announced the signing of Nico Hulkenberg, who will return to Formula 1 after a three-year stint on the sidelines. Outgoing Mick Schumacher is said to be in talks with Mercedes over the role of reserve driver. And Alpha Tauri’s only second race winner, Pierre Gasly, will play for Red Bull’s Italian sister team in his final weekend.
