Ministry of Health-Abu Dhabi, the regulator of the UAE’s healthcare sector, has cooperated with the major group procurement organization (GPO) of the UAE’s basic medical equipment supply chain to announce the purchase of AstraZeneca’s AZD7442 drug. Once the new innovative drug is approved for local use, it will be distributed to health care providers, specifically for the prevention of serious infections and deaths in high-risk patients who have not been vaccinated.

This agreement is in line with the country’s efforts to fight COVID-19, making the UAE one of the first countries to receive antibody drug treatment for patients with immunocompromised function. The agreement strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position as a regional life science center and is part of a series of announcements regarding new partnerships and agreements.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Abu Dhabi has led an effective human-centered response based on cooperation with leading local and international pharmaceutical companies. For AZD7442, the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Health has been committed to establishing a seamless supply chain process through Rafed, which will facilitate the procurement, storage and distribution of AstraZeneca’s drugs through the Rafed Distribution Center, the largest facility specializing in cold storage in the region.

The availability of AZD7442 in the local market is the main solution for the healthcare sector to combat COVID-19, ensuring the health and safety of all community members, regardless of their health status.

According to HEDR. “Once approved, this drug will help immunocompromised patients who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons and limit autoimmune diseases. The UAE will continue to use regional and international cooperation to drive change,” Al Kaabi added.

This collaboration between DoH, Rafed and AstraZeneca is another important milestone for healthcare, logistics and supply chain entities, and they will continue to contribute to the development of Abu Dhabi’s healthcare industry.

Rafed CEO Rashed Al Qubaisi added: “The UAE has once again demonstrated its commitment to protecting the health of its citizens and residents by cooperating with leading pharmaceutical manufacturers around the world. There is great hope. Through our network of strategic logistics partners, Rafed is building an infrastructure to ensure smooth logistics distribution throughout the UAE and even the Middle East and Africa.”
