Just months after Derek Chauvin was found guilty for the death of George FloydMinneapolis police have found themselves in headlines again for the murder of another Black man, 22-year-old Amir Locke.
In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Locke was awaken to gunshots as entered officers an apartment on a no-knock warrant. On Friday, officials released the footage.
In the beginning of the body cam footage, you can see an officer placing a key into the lock of the apartment where Locke was fatally shot. As they enter with guns drawn and yelling, “Police! Search warrant!,” Locke can reportedly be seen getting up from the couch with a gun. Seconds later, he was fatally shot.
According to CNNLocke’s name was not on any search warrants before entry. His lawyer also stated that his gun was legally registered.
Mike Freeman Hennepin County Attorney stated he requested that Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison join in on the review of the shooting.
“We will be working with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to ensure a thorough and complete evaluation,” Freeman said in a statement. “Thereafter we will decide together, based on the law and evidence, whether criminal charges should be brought.”
Ellison also stated, “Amir Locke’s life mattered. He was only 22 years old and had his whole life ahead of him. His family and friends must now live the rest of their lives without him.”
As you know, Taylor was shot and killed by police during a botch raid in Louisville, KY in March 2020.
