In a scene worthy of being made into a comedy sketch, a Turkish man joined a search team looking for missing persons, but did not realize that he was the one being pursued.
On Tuesday night, 51-year-old Beyhan Mutlu and a friend were drinking in the forest in the town of Inegol in northwestern Turkey. After he did not go home, his wife reported that he was missing, and she heard that he had left his friend when he was drunk.
Turkish online news site T24 reported on Friday that the gendarmerie and rescue teams were called to find Mutlu who was sleeping in a house in the forest.
In the morning he met members of the search team and decided to help them find the missing person. According to reports, he spent several hours “helping” rescue efforts.
“After a while, they said they were looking for Beyhan Mutlu,” T24 quoted him as saying. “As soon as I heard my name, I broke out in a cold sweat.”
When one of the rescuers called out his name, he figured out what had happened. He replied: “I am here.”
“They didn’t believe me. When my friend Mesut saw me, the truth came out,” Mutlu said later.
He was pulled aside by one of the rescuers to make a statement. “Police officer, don’t punish me too harshly. My father will kill me,” he told them.
According to NTV reports, he was then taken the elevator home. It is unclear whether he faces any punishment.
