Markets play a very important role in setting national priorities, and sustainability is one of them. In May, Abu Dhabi banned single-use plastic bags, a key step towards sustainability. In addition, a green campaign was recently launched to distribute free reusable bags to store owners to support the initiative.
Abu Dhabi’s mission zero is to protect the environment
The Abu Dhabi Environment Agency (EAD) implemented its latest regulations in June this year, banning the use of single-use, oxidatively degradable plastic bags (thickness less than 50 microns). Multipurpose bags that meet technical requirements set by the Abu Dhabi Quality and Compliance Committee must be used.
Strong data from around the world show that such regulations are effective in protecting the environment.

Reusable bags make people aware of their actions
A great place to start any publicity program is retail. Because of the industry’s size and diversity, governments often use the industry to draw consumer attention to environmental issues, whether through the organic movement that began in the mid-20th century, highlighting country-of-origin labels for fuels used to transport goods, Or through refill-only stores that have recently appeared.
Educating individuals about the value of sustainability may encourage them to consider sustainability in other areas of their lives, such as their home, workplace and car. For example, EAD installed “Big Zero” containers last week to collect single-use plastic bottles for recycling. Additionally, the bins will be placed in Abu Dhabi’s famous shopping malls, parks and event venues.
