Lawmakers and protesters begged the Governor of Missouri to stop the execution of Ernest Johnson on Tuesday.
Ernest Johnson was convicted of killing three Missouri convenience store employees in 1995. Johnson’s lawyer argued that in 2008, a brain tumor operation cost him one-fifth of his brain and made him mentally disabled.According to reports, they said it was inhumane to kill him root.
“The truth is that these death sentences have nothing to do with justice,” Democratic Rep. Emmanuel Cliffe and Corey Bush wrote in a letter to Republican Missouri Governor Michael L. Parson, hoping to stop this. A 61-year-old is about to be executed, this Kansas City Star report. “They are about who has institutional power and who doesn’t. Just like slavery and lynching before it, the death penalty perpetuates the cycle of trauma, violence, and state-sanctioned murder in black and brown communities.”
Representatives of Missouri joined the pope, and the pope also asked for forgiveness for Johnson’s life.
“Daily Beast” reported that “The Vatican’s ambassador to the United States also transmitted a letter this week from Pope Francis to Governor Parsons, in which an’emergency request’ to stop the executions and request that Johnson be treated with leniency in order to maintain the’sacredness of human life’. ‘”
Johnson is scheduled to die by injection at Bonnetle State Prison on Tuesday night.
As a result of surgery on his brain tumor, doctors removed 20% of his brain tissue, and those struggling to save his life believed that his planned execution might cause him severe and painful seizures.
The protesters described the execution as cruel and unusual punishment.
Last week, dozens of people protested outside the Missouri State Capitol on behalf of Johnson, including the Missouri Civil Liberties Union and the state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
