Mitch McConnell faces backlash over black voter comments

[ad_1]

Wow! Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who went viral on Twitter, faced backlash for his comments yesterday. The Kentucky Republican spoke to reporters after Democrats were unable to move “voting freedom,” the John R. Lewis Act, to the Senate. Democrats in the Senate failed to get the 60 votes needed to move the bill through a Republican filibuster.

A reporter asked Mitch McConnell to share a message to voters in minority communities. Specifically, those worried that voting restrictions enacted in many states will prevent them from entering the ballot box without a new federal law. “That concern is misplaced because if you look at the statistics, African-American voters turn out as much as Americans,” Senate Leader Mitch McConnell said in response. WLKY Voting restrictions, like those passed in 19 states last year, disproportionately affect voters of color, the study shows.

People on Twitter talk about these comments all day. “I don’t know who needs to hear this (Mitch McConnell), but African Americans are Americans,” one person tweeted. Even public officials called out McConnell. One is Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Illinois. He tweeted: “African Americans are Americans. #MickeyPlease”

Voting is more important now than ever. That’s why the Freedom to Vote: The John R. Lewis Act made Election Day a national holiday to ensure access to early voting and mail-in ballots. This voting method has become especially popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. It would also allow the Justice Department to intervene in states with a history of voter meddling, among other changes. Roommates, what do you think of Mitch McConnell’s comments?
