Mitsubishi Completes Largest Hydrogen Hybrid Project

[ad_1]

Together with the Georgia Electric Power and Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Mitsubishi Electric has demonstrated a fuel blend of hydrogen and natural gas on a natural gas turbine at Georgia Power’s McDonough-Atkinson facility.

The project is the first and largest globally to demonstrate a 20% hydrogen fuel blend on an advanced gas turbine. Mitsubishi Electric provided a full turnkey service for the project, including engineering, planning, hydrogen hybrid hardware, controls, commissioning and risk management.

Mitsubishi Electric is working on similar pioneering decarbonization projects in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena), including the ANRPC hydrogen fuel conversion hybrid project in Egypt, to achieve 100% hydrogen by 2023.

Advanced Hydrogen Fuel Conversion

Mitsubishi Electric recently entered into an agreement with Alexandria National Refining & Petrochemicals Company (ANRPC), a leading Egyptian oil and gas company, to provide advanced hydrogen fuel conversion technology solutions to support the company in achieving its decarbonization goals. The solution will be installed at the ARNPC refinery in Alexandria, which supplies 30% of the gasoline for domestic consumption in Egypt.

As part of the project, Mitsubishi Electric will be responsible for the design, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of a fuel conversion solution for the existing 100 t/h boiler, which will be able to burn up to 100% hydrogen.

This includes installing state-of-the-art hydrogen burner technology and advanced control solutions to ensure efficient and safe operations. Dry low NOx (DLN) hydrogen blending successfully achieved 20% at the designed 100% natural gas firing temperature, within emissions compliance of existing air permits, and without compromising maintenance intervals.

Global Milestones

Khalid Salem, President of Mitsubishi Electric Middle East and North Africa, said: “We are proud of this global milestone, which reinforces Mitsubishi Electric’s leadership in the successful deployment of hydrogen hybrid combustion technology. Clients execute industry-leading hydrogen fuel switching projects, including ANRPC in Egypt. In addition to delivering complete turnkey projects, we work with clients to secure the hydrogen supply chain. This is part of our ongoing commitment at Mitsubishi Electric to enable Our customers are able to achieve their decarbonization goals.”

Georgia Power, the largest power subsidiary of the Southern Company, has partnered with Mitsubishi Electric for landmark testing as part of a continued commitment to new research and development (R&D) to build the energy grid of the future and reduce carbon emissions from its power generation fleet, which has been around since 2007. Georgia Power’s carbon emissions have been reduced by more than 60 percent.

“This massive hydrogen demonstration project at the McDonough-Atkinson facility is another example of how Georgia Power and Southern are building the future of energy today. The demonstration helps provide long-term clean and carbon-free use of existing infrastructure Paving the way. Making these smart investments on behalf of our customers today ensures that we can continue to provide clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy as Georgia grows and prospers for decades to come,” said Georgia Power Senior Allen Reaves, Vice President and Senior Production Officer said.

long-term value

“Not only does this research and development deliver long-term value to our customers, it also helps drive the entire energy industry towards a cleaner, carbon-free future. We are proud to play a major role in this and are very proud of us and our partners Excited about what Mitsubishi Power has achieved.”

“Mitsubishi Electric is committed to our mission of providing our customers with power generation and storage solutions that enable them to cost-effectively and reliably address climate change and advance humanity,” said Mark Bissonnette, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Power Generation, Americas, Mitsubishi Electric. Prosperity. The hydrogen hybrid demonstration project at the McDonough-Atkinson facility brings us one step closer to achieving net zero across the industry. Together with our customers and partners, we are creating power change.”

Using part of the results of a project commissioned by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Japan’s national research and development agency, Mitsubishi Electric has completed the hydrogen blending of an M501G gas turbine unit with an output of approximately 265 MW.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), an independent, not-for-profit energy research and development agency, supported the development of this project. EPRI researchers were on site during the test, and the organization will release a detailed report on the tests and results later this summer. EPRI provides thought leadership and technical expertise through such programs as well as through programs such as the Low Carbon Resource Initiative. arab trade news agency
