Just eight days before Abu Dhabi takes the spotlight on global sports with UFC 280: Charles Oliveira vs. Islam Makhachev, the UAE capital will be in the spotlight at Zayed Sports The Jiu-Jitsu Arena in the city hosts the 2nd Mixed Martial Arts Youth Championship.
From 4pm this Friday, male and female fighters from the UAE will compete in multiple divisions, aiming to attract attention and demonstrate a combination of potential and proficiency.
The second round of the tournament takes over from the first match at the Etihad Arena a month ago.
The city will witness the fighting as the annual and highly anticipated Showdown Week in Abu Dhabi – the headline title fight between Oliveira and Makhachev – kicks off on Monday sports.
However, given the rapid popularity of MMA in the UAE, Friday’s youth event could be the perfect precursor, attracting numerous officials, past and present MMA stars and representatives of the international organisations that oversee it.
“The second MMA Youth Championship arrived in the city at an ideal time,” said His Excellency Mohammed bin Dalmouj Al Dhaheri, Chairman of the UAE MMA Council.
“Abu Dhabi Showdown Week is coming up and some of the biggest names in the sport are coming to the capital, so this is the perfect prelude.”
Dhaheri, who was recently elected as the first vice-president of the Asian MMA Association, said that up to 30 potential MMA judges will also be in the showdown with Abu Dhabi. Renowned UFC referee and IMMAF Director of Regulatory Affairs Marc Goddard will oversee the session.
Elsewhere, Mohammed Al Hosani, board member of the UAE MMA Council, added: “The second edition of the MMA Youth Championship is expected to have 20 matches, including featured matches in each category. Interesting and surprising announcement on the development of MMA in the country.”
