Mohamed bin Rashid awards 10 winners of Zayed Sustainability Prize 2022

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, today presented the awards to the 10 winners of the 2022 Zayed Sustainability Award.

The awards ceremony coincided with the start of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2022. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, also attended the ceremony.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum congratulated the winners in the five categories, reaffirming the key role of the award in fulfilling participants’ aspirations for sustainable community development.

This year, the Zayed Sustainability Awards and ADSW have teamed up with Expo 2020 Dubai to host the ADSW Opening Ceremony and the 13th Awards Ceremony, both at the Dubai Exhibition Centre on the morning of Monday 17 January. The event brought together thousands of attendees and more than 600 VIPs from around the world, including heads of state, government ministers, industry leaders and national ambassadors.

In his speech at the award ceremony, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said: “Under the leadership of His Highness the President, the UAE continues to advance the global sustainable development agenda to stimulate economic and human sustainability. His Highness continued: “Over the past 14 years, the wise and long-term vision and legacy of Sheikh Zayed, the Founding Father of the UAE, has inspired the enthusiasm of millions of sustainability pioneers around the world, inspiring us to award this award through strengthening and diversity. Transforming its products into the all-encompassing awards it is today has created new heights.”

Lieutenant General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, also attended the event; Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs His Excellency Al Nahyan; His Excellency Sheikh Hamid bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council; and Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, and from the UAE and abroad Multiple heads of state, ministers and other high-level dignitaries, as well as past winners and 2022 finalists.

The $3 million award is the UAE’s ground-breaking Sustainability Award, recognizing innovation, impact and inspiring sustainability and humanitarian solutions in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) and high schools around the world plan. Through its 86 former recipients, the award has changed the lives of more than 370 million people in 150 countries since 2008. In the Health, Food, Energy and Water categories, each winner will receive $600,000, while the Global High School category has six winners representing six world regions, with each winner receiving up to $100,000.

In the Global High School category, His Highness stressed the importance of empowering youth as future drivers of sustainable development to shape future leaders and effectively empower them to further their socio-cultural and economic impact development in a rapidly changing world.

On a broader level, His Highness also praised the vision and sophistication displayed by many of the student-led proposals, noting their potential impact on individual, community and global levels.

In the “Health” category, Argentina’s Mamotest was awarded for its efforts to increase diagnostic and life-saving services in teleradiology and teleanalysis. Mamotest is currently deploying centers to provide quality care to 582,697 beneficiaries affected by breast cancer, with plans to expand to more than 1 million over five years. Mamotest also enjoys robust patient journey follow-up, as 87% of women diagnosed within its system receive life-saving treatment on time. Additionally, to date, Mamotest has successfully performed more than 5,000 diagnoses while raising awareness for millions of women.

S4S Technologies from India was named winner in the Food category for its important work on food preservation and dehydration systems. They currently directly affect 35,820 people, and the SME plans to expand this to 10 million people within five years.

The organization is committed to empowering rural women, using new technologies to reduce food waste and increase farmers’ incomes, and is deploying solar technology to help women farmers increase their incomes. As part of its commitment to supporting gender equality, supported by economic opportunity, S4S Technologies provided additional income to 455 female farmers who turned into micro-entrepreneurs, increasing their profits by 50% to 200% annually .

In the energy category, Bangladesh-based SOLshare has created an interconnected microgrid for a peer-to-peer energy exchange network to distribute electricity more efficiently in rural communities in the country. The organization received the 2022 award for its efforts in energy management, as it currently benefits 35,300 people and plans to expand its reach to 2 million people over the next five years.

SOLshare provides more than 1,000 households with more than 85 MWh of additional clean energy and serves approximately 500 entrepreneurs on the grid, 25% of whom are women with significantly increased incomes.

Wateroam, a Singapore-based SME, won the ‘Water’ category for its commitment to tackling the global challenge of polluted water through portable water filters serving disaster-affected areas and rural communities. Wateraom’s safe drinking water solutions provide more than 150,000 people in 38 countries with daily access to clean drinking water, with plans to expand coverage to 1 million people within five years.

Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, chairman of the jury and former president of the Republic of Iceland, said: “As the sustainable world passes through a more challenging but firmer prism. We It is believed that all of these recipients will lay the foundation for future economic growth and prosperity for vulnerable communities within and beyond borders, while also making significant contributions to key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.”

Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Director General of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, said: “Under the guidance of the wise leadership of the UAE and the enduring legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed, the Prize continues to provide A real, meaningful and long-term impact on numerous communities around the world. This has earned the award a global reputation for over a decade as a catalyst for change, reaching over 370 million lives to date.”

HE Al Jaber added: “The Zayed Sustainability Award Ceremony at Expo 2020 Dubai and the opening of ADSW reinforces the UAE’s commitment to sustainable and humanitarian development, the country’s progressive, inclusive economic growth characteristics of the model.”

“Thanks to our current list of 96 winners and their shared commitment to building a better world, communities living in the dark have been illuminated with essential solar lighting, millions of children are getting safe drinking water, hunger and Malnutrition is being optimized through sustainable food solutions and access to life-saving healthcare in remote parts of the world.”

The Director-General of the award concluded his speech by highlighting the expanded impact and geographic reach of the award through the UAE-driven “Beyond2020” humanitarian initiative. Beyond2020 has been donating key sustainability solutions developed by past winners and finalists to underprivileged communities in various regions and world leaders, working with several leading UAE and international partners.

In the Global High Schools category, six schools, each representing a world region, received awards and high schools submitted project proposals to build or enhance the solutions they developed for the school or local community. The category was introduced in 2012 with the goal of inspiring young people to become pioneers, innovators and sustainability advocates who will contribute to a more sustainable future.

The recipients of the 2022 awards are Instituto Iberia (Dominican Republic), representing the Americas; LiceoEuropeo (Spain), representing Europe and Central Asia; Eastern Mediterranean School (Israel), representing the Middle East and North Africa region; Sayidina Abubakar Secondary School (Uganda), representing the Sahara South Africa; Hira School (Maldives) for South Asia and finally UWC ISAK (Japan) from East Asia and the Pacific.
