Immortal Sports Entertainment (MSE) announced Wednesday that its previously announced acquisition of NBCUniversal’s 67% stake in NBC Sports Washington from Comcast has closed.
MSE acquired a 33% stake in NBC Sports Washington in 2016 and now has full ownership of the regional sports network.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. LionTree acted as exclusive financial advisor to the MSE transaction.
NBC Sports Washington is the exclusive local television rights holder for the Washington Capitals-Washington Wizards game. The network spans the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia, as well as parts of Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia. The network launched in April 1984 as home team sports and has been the regional television partner of the Capitals and Wizards since its inception.
As part of the deal, NBCUniversal will continue to assist network operations by providing enterprise and shared services, including distribution, technical resources and production facilities, for up to 18 months. NBC Sports Regional Networks, part of NBCUniversal Local, operates a portfolio of six regional sports networks.
NBC Sports Washington expects to retain its current name and branding for the 2022-23 season. Network rebranding is expected for the Capitals and Wizards in the 2023-24 season.
MSE’s platform includes five professional sports teams: the NHL’s Washington Capitals, the NBA’s Washington Wizards, the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, the NBA G League’s Capital Go-Go and the NBA 2K League’s Wizards District Gaming.
In addition, MSE owns and operates the Capital One Arena and manages the MedStar Capitals Iceplex (the capital’s driving range), the MedStar Health Performance Center (the driving range for Wizards, Mystics, and Go-Go), and the EagleBank Arena (on the campus of George Mason University in Virginia) .
Additionally, MSE, a pioneer in sports betting, opened North America’s first in-arena retail store at Capital One Arena in 2020 with Caesars Entertainment. It also launched its first regional sports streaming service for 2016, with the Monumental Sports Network offering local and high school sports as well as exclusive Capital, Wizards and Mystic content.
