The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has announced that the pumped-storage hydroelectric power station in Hatta is more than 50 percent complete.
It is the first site of its kind in the GCC and involves an investment of up to AED 1.421 billion (US$ 387 million).
Introducing a project update, Dewa said construction of the 72-meter main Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) wall on the upper dam was complete and work on the 37-meter-high Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) sidewall of the project’s upper dam was fully completed.
The plant will have a production capacity of 250 megawatts (MW) and a storage capacity of 1,500 MWh with a lifespan of up to 80 years. It will use the water storage of the Hada Dam and the upper dam built on the mountain to generate electricity.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of Dewa, said the Hatta plant is part of its efforts to achieve Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy by 2050 to provide 100% of Dubai’s total clean energy generation capacity by 2050 year.
“The project supports an integrated plan to develop Hatta and meet its social, economic, developmental and environmental needs, in addition to providing employment opportunities for Hatta’s citizens,” he said.
Al Tayer said the Hatta project was launched as part of Dubai’s initiative to diversify renewable and clean energy production.
These include different technologies such as solar photovoltaic panels, concentrated solar power and the use of renewable energy to produce green hydrogen, he added.arab trade news agency
