The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE) has announced that its pumped storage hydropower plant in the Hatta area is progressing steadily, with 70 percent of the work now complete.
The plant, being built by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) at a total investment of 1.42 billion dirhams (US$387 million), is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of next year, DSCE said at its 76th meeting, chaired by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum.
The meeting, held virtually in the presence of DSCE Vice Chairman Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, discussed the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park phase in line with Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and Dubai’s net zero carbon emissions. Progress towards the 2050 strategy to have 100% of Dubai’s total electricity capacity provided by clean energy by 2050.
In its statement, DSCE said the solar park had reached a production capacity of 2,327 megawatts (MW), in addition to the 533 MW underway.
Dewa also announced the sixth phase of the 1,800 MW solar park, which will reach a capacity of 5,000 MW by the end of 2030. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park includes a research and development center dedicated to developing photovoltaic cells, storage batteries and improving the efficiency of solar panels, it added.
Also present were Ahmad Bouti Al-Muhalbi, Secretary-General of Dubai Supreme Energy Council; Abdulla bin Kalban, Managing Director, Emirates Global Aluminum (EGA); Saif Humaid Al Falasi, Chief Executive Officer, Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC); Juan-Pablo Freile, Managing Director, Dubai Petroleum; and Hussain Al Banna, Acting CEO, Strategy and Corporate Governance, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
Al Tayer said the meeting also discussed the operation of the region’s first green hydrogen production facility to support energy diversification strategies and promote sustainable development and a green economy.
“As part of its Space-D program, Dewa launched the latest nanosatellite to support its cloud computing network,” he said.
“This enhances the digitization of electricity and water networks, increases the efficiency and effectiveness of planning, operations and preventive maintenance in the generation, transmission and distribution sectors; smart grids and charging stations for electric vehicles, and studies of the concentration of solar radiation , and integrate them with power plant operations using artificial intelligence,” he added.-TradeArabia News Service
