Followers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), also known as Mormons, will have their own official place of worship in the emirate of Dubai for the first time in the Middle East.
The temple plan is the first Announce Completed by LDS in 2020, construction will be complete in about three years. According to The National, the Mormon place of worship will be built in Dubai’s Expo City. “The plan to build a temple in Dubai is in response to their gracious invitation, and we are very grateful,” said Russell M. Nelson, LDS President at the time.
“Having a temple would be very unique because not every country has one,” said Roland Barker, the church’s volunteer adviser for the Middle East and North Africa region.
“It will serve a large population, wider than the UAE. Other members will want to visit Dubai because there is a temple there.”
Members of the community currently gather every Sunday for worship at the “shelter house” in Abu Dhabi, which was completed in 2013, and at a hotel in Dubai. There are thought to be around 2,000 LDS adherents in the UAE.
Hend Al-Otaiba, Director of Strategic Communications at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC), said of plans to establish the first Mormon temple in the country, Say: “The UAE is proud to welcome the Latter-day Saint community to worship with the future construction of a temple in Dubai… the temple will be the first church in the Middle East, symbolizing the interfaith tolerance on which the UAE has grown and a spirit of solidarity was established.”
