On Tuesday, Joy Reid became popular on Twitter after making some comments on the media’s inconsistencies and double standards in the Gabby Petito case and missing black people.
When talking about the case, Reid realized that the Petitto family deserved justice. “Needless to say, no family should endure this kind of pain,” she said, “and the Petitto family certainly deserves answers and justice.”
Then she will continue to refer to the phrase “Missing White Women Syndrome” coined by PBS anchor Gwen Ifill. This sentence shows that the media seems to be more interested in reporting stories about missing white women than those of black people or other people of color.
“No one is looking for us.” In all reports on the Gabby Petito case, Joy Reid referred to the media’s obsession with missing white women, calling it “missing white women syndrome.” pic.twitter.com/FPbA3bHjNq

During “The ReidOut,” Reid said, “The way this story appeals to the whole country makes many people wonder why the media don’t give the same attention when people of color disappear?” Reid continued, “Well, the answer is actually There is a name on it: Missing White Women Syndrome, the term was coined by the late and great Gwen Yiffel to describe the disappearance of the media and the public like Rassy Peterson or Natalie Holloway The fascination of white women while ignoring that the case involves people of color.”
Social media reacted mixedly to Joey’s comments.
Someone wrote on Twitter: “I’m far from being an expert on racism, but listening to Joy Reid’s comments on #GabbyPepito is basically judging how the media reported the disappearance of white women and the disappearance of women of color. She is right in the situation. Calling for double standards without any racism.”
Another said: “I mean, 321,859 whites went missing last year, and no one has received the same attention as this case. In general, the media doesn’t really care about most missing people.”
As we did before Report, A body believed to be Gabby Petito was found. Her boyfriend Brian Laundrie is now an interested person and cannot be found.
