Hollywood stars, including Jennifer Coolidge and Pedro Pascal, paid tribute to outstanding writers during their acceptance speeches at the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

The pre-recorded ceremony was played after the live event was canceled at the last minute during the first major writers’ strike in 15 years.

White Lotus star Coolidge said she stood “shoulder to shoulder” with them.

Accepting the Comedy Genius Award on Sunday, she said they were “fighting for the rights of artists everywhere”.

“You know, almost all great comedy starts with great writers,” she said.

“As a proud member of SAG [Screen Actors Guild]I stand before you tonight, standing shoulder to shoulder with my brothers and sisters in the WGA [Writers Guild of America], is now fighting, fighting for the rights of artists everywhere. “

The WGA has said it plans to picket Sunday’s event in Santa Monica, Calif., before canceling the glitzy live show in favor of a quieter event.

Show bosses said they did so to “take a hard look at how best to deliver the fan debuts we envision”.

Accepting his third award of the night, “The Last of Us” star Pascal also thanked those who “worked really hard” for a fair wage.

The zombie drama, written by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, won best television show, while earlier Pascal and co-star Bella Ramsay won best duo.

“Craig and Neil can’t be here,” Pascal said in the video message. “We all stand in solidarity with the WGA who are fighting hard for a fair wage. We appreciate you and we love you.”

The writers’ strike began last week when more than 11,000 WGA members shut down tools after talks with major studios collapsed.

The union is seeking higher minimum wages, more writers per show and a larger share of royalties for shows that can now be played on streaming platforms for years, as well as assurances around the use of artificial intelligence.

Late Night Comedy Stand Up Shows was the first to go off the air Writers without them, and picket lines formed outside studios and offices belonging to companies like Netflix and Paramount.

British actor James Quinn also paid tribute to the writers on Sunday when he accepted his award for best breakthrough performance.

Quinn, who played Eddie Munson in “Stranger Things,” said: “I don’t think people would get along with Eddie or any other character in the Stranger Things universe without compassion, intelligence, and high-quality writing.” Make a connection.

“Being a writer is a tough job,” he added. “It deserves respect.

“If we respect each other, we can create a kinder, more inclusive, more collaborative environment for everyone — that’s great.”

The night’s top prize for best picture went to thriller “Scream VI,” while Tom Cruise won best performance for “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Drew Barrymore was originally scheduled to attend the ceremony before withdrawing in a similar show of solidarity.

She did, however, appear in several pre-recorded skits, parodying movies like Barbie and Cocaine Bear, and she also won an award for Best Host on The Drew Barrymore Show.
