The Hale-Michigan Mud Race (MMJ), already known as the biggest mud race in the North, is gearing up to exceed expectations for its ninth annual event in 2022.
Scheduled for Tuesday-Sunday, August 16-21, it will again be held at the Iosco County Fairgrounds in Hale on M-65 downtown, just north of the traffic lights.
This year’s event officially kicks off on Monday, August 15th. The gates will open at noon and only VIP ticket holders will be able to enter.Food 5-7pm, live music at 9pm
Along with partners like Trucks Gone Wild and D&D Paddy Tires, organizers look forward to the largest and most action-packed MMJ event to date. Excited to welcome attendees to the 125-acre venue, and they encouraged everyone to come out and enjoy a week of “mud and mayhem” with friends and family from across the country.
MMJ is co-owned and promoted by Jesse and Melissa McNicholl and Ron and Kristie Heal.
Of course, with the exception of some Michiganders, Melissa McNichol said, they have people from Canada, Florida, Vermont, New York, North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and probably more .
“We expect hundreds of trucks at this year’s event,” she shared. “Trucks range from backyard trucks to giant trucks with over 2,000 horsepower.”

Admission includes the option to use country camping for free at the fairgrounds, more details can be found on the website above.
Also on this site, waiver forms required for entry can be downloaded in advance, as well as additional waiver forms that are mandatory for minors and must be signed by a parent/guardian.
Admission is per person and includes the day of arrival and the remaining days of the activity. For example, if someone pays admission and attends on Wednesday, they can also return to the event Thursday through Saturday.
Early entry on Tuesday, August 16 is $100, and gates will open at noon.
As part of the spectacle, a truck and side-by-side show will take place at the Plainfield Township Fire Station adjacent to the M-65 exhibit grounds.Open to the public, it will run from 6pm to 8pm
Back at the fairgrounds, the DJ will be bringing music to the crowd from 9pm
Tickets are $80 for those attending MMJ on Wednesday, August 17th. Events will include a pit pit open from 8am to 8pm, a side-by-side race at 8pm and a Tuff Truck event at 9pm, followed by another evening of DJ entertainment.
The open pit on Thursday, August 18 will run from 9 am to 8 pm, and tickets for the day are priced at $70.
Beginning at 9 p.m., the night’s main feature will be a prime-time Midwest Off-Road Racing Series event under the lights, followed by another DJ night that will keep the audience energized.
Tickets for Friday, August 19 are $60 and include mud pits open from 9-11 am and again from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm
Also on Friday, eight teams of five trucks each will compete for the top spot in the Royal Rumble race from noon to 3 p.m. Later, scheduled for 6pm, is the Championship Bracket Round of the Royal Rumble.
The Mr. Mud Jam Mudathon obstacle course will start at 9pm, as will the Mud Jam Mudathon obstacle course, which will also feature a bikini competition.
Truck tug-of-war will be the last show on Friday starting at 10pm
Although planned until August 21st, the last official date for the MMJ 2022 organization event is Saturday, August 20th.
Freedom Day was the theme for the finale, and those arriving at the fairgrounds were encouraged to don their best red, white and blue.
Tickets are $50, and the fun will begin with a mud pit that opens from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm and resumes from 4:30 pm until dusk.
The noon Mega Truck Freestyle event, with prizes of up to $9,000, will continue with the Hoop​​y Cruise race in the stands at 7 p.m.
A free contest is also planned at 7:15pm to select the best dressed red, white and blue participants

Organisers say the annual event attracts thousands of off-road enthusiasts each year and has a huge impact on the local economy. Business owners and several other regional sponsors have long supported MMJ because of its economic impact on communities and local institutions.
It is further noted that the MMJ has become one of the premier off-road events in the country. It won the title of largest in the North in its second annual run, and it continues to expand and gain popularity each year.
As a reminder, a waiver must be signed to enter MMJ’s exhibit grounds. A full list of agreements and other details are available on the event website above, but some rules for attendees to keep in mind are as follows:
- All state and federal laws apply.
- Weapons, fireworks or glass are not permitted. Weapons will be confiscated and a $50 fee will be charged, and ammunition will not be returned.
- All motor vehicles should be turned off when it gets dark.
- A speed limit of five miles per hour will always be enforced or the vehicle will be impounded.
- No drinking and driving; underage drinking; fighting; saving spots; drones; dumping waste such as gas, oil, sewage; and not tearing the ground.
- A bonfire must use a ring of fire.
- All pets must be on a leash and owners must clean their animals.
- Legal action will be taken against anyone who violates private property.
- All ATVs and UTVs must have a flag 10 feet above the ground, and flags can be purchased at the venue. Sport quads or ATVs with clutches, off-road vehicles and tricycles are not permitted.
