Telugu superstar Vijay Dwarakonda has a fan base in India. And this time, he was back in an incarnation like never before. The star, who has long been synonymous with romantically angry young men, spoke about his film “Liger”, which will be released on the 25th of this month, and the controversy surrounding his previous film.
Ananya Pandey and Ramya Krishnan are the other main cast members of the film, which will be released in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam at the same time. Boxing legend Mike Tyson also played a major role in the film.
What is a “liger”?
While there is action in the film, at its core is the warm bond between mother and son. Ramya Krishnan plays the mother. Mike Tyson also plays a vital role in this film.
There are many celebrities in the movie (Puri Jagannath, Karan Johar). How did you become a part of it?
Some of my favorite movies are directed by Puri Jagannath. His film “Pokkiri” and the main character are highly praised. I never thought I could make a movie with him. All of these factors came to my mind when I heard the script for Liger. I realized this was one of the movies I was really looking for. Soon I started preparing for the role.
Karan Johar called me after watching Arjun Reddy. He liked that movie a lot. Karan told me that day that if I was keen to explore Bollywood, if I found an interesting script, I should let him know. He liked the script of “Liger”. Since I felt the film had a pan-Indian appeal, I thought it would be ideal to work with Karan Johar. That’s how he came in as a producer.
How was Mike Tyson’s experience?
When my mom heard I was going to act with Mike Tyson, she was more anxious than I was. She was afraid I would get hurt in the fight scene with Mike Tyson. She even held services at home. During this time, she would call the film crew to ask for an update on the shooting. She would tell them it was their duty to protect me from Mike Tyson. But when you know him personally, Mike Tyson is such a lovely person. An ordinary man who used to share his family and other personal things with us.
You said you were waiting for a call from filmmakers like Lokesh, Vetrimaaran and Pa Ranjith. Are you expecting a call from Malayalam Cinemas?
I personally don’t know any Malayalam filmmakers. I love Anwar Rashid movies. And Fahadh Fasil’s movies. I love movies made by Fahadh Fasil and Friends like “Kumbalangi Nights” etc. It was Dulquer Salmaan who introduced me to Malayalam movies. I like most of his films, including Kamatipaadam. I also watch Shane Nigam and Soubin Shahir movies.
Despite the success of Arjun Reddy, it has also been criticized for glorifying misogyny…
The audience is the main factor in a movie. It is not necessary that everyone should like everything. It’s certainly good to have discussions about the content and performance of the film. I’m also someone who keeps a keen eye on all discussions, both positive and negative. I wholeheartedly welcome such discussions. This is very much needed. But I didn’t do anything on purpose to hurt anyone in “Arjun Reddy.”
You are a much-loved actor. How do you react to all the love?
I really appreciate all the love. I study in a boarding school. I was a little hesitant to interact with girls at the time. After Year 10, I moved to Hyderabad to study. In my class, there are many girls. But I was too scared to talk to them. It is great to see that I am loved by so many people today.
How about an all-India promotional tour?
It’s certainly not easy. But it has another side. You’re meeting and interacting with a lot of people and it really is a rich experience.
