Nassau teens head to Abu Dhabi Global Fashion Competition finals

GLEN COVE, N.Y. – A Glen Cove teen will bring her creative and innovative designs to the runways in Abu Dhabi in January as part of the finals of a global fashion competition The competition challenges young people to create high-end fashion from recycled items.

Glen Cove High School’s Natalia Monsale advanced to the final after qualifying at the New York final in June and will now compete against 59 students from places including Milan, London, Paris and the United Arab Emirates.

Monsale created an outfit she calls Grandstar, made of duct tape and paper clips, inspired by the night sky.

She will be traveling to Abu Dhabi with her fashion illustration teacher Leeann Palazzo, who helped Monsale and four other Glen Cove students enter the competition. Virginia Papasidero, Betzy Mejia, Lizbeth Rojas and Anoushka Glouchkjov also presented their work at the New York City final.

Glen Cove Superintendent Maria Rianna said, “The district is very proud of Natalia, who has taken her outstanding creation to new heights by participating in an international fashion competition.”

“Her accomplishments are a perfect example of what Glen Cove students can achieve when they put their mind to it. We will continue to encourage our students to take their classroom work beyond the classroom by participating in competitions such as Junk Kouture.”

The competition will award prizes in several categories on January 11, 2023, as well as the top prize, the 2022 World Designer of the Year Award.
