Ex-Fox News employee sued for sexual abuse under survivor law
A former Fox News employee who said she was sexually abused by the network’s late CEO Roger Ailes is suing under New York state’s adult survivors law. The lawsuit, filed Jan. 25 in New York State Supreme Court, also involves 21st Century Fox, the predecessor of Rupert Murdoch’s Fox Corporation, and Bill Sheehan, Ailes’ top lieutenant and former Fox News president, now Works News Nation for Nexstar Media Group.
Chinese holiday spreads virus, but fewer COVID-19 deaths
China reported a sharp drop in new deaths related to COVID-19 during the Lunar New Year holiday, even as a surge in travel increased the likelihood of more virus infections across the country. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention said there were 6,364 deaths linked to COVID-19 in hospitals across the country between Jan. 20 and Jan. 26, almost half of the previous week.
Ex-NATO general wins Czech vote over former prime minister
A former NATO general who has pledged staunch support for Ukraine is set to become the next Czech president after a convincing victory over a scrappy former billionaire prime minister. According to data released by the Czech Statistical Office, Peter Pavel, who once served as the top military officer in NATO, declared victory with 57.9% of the votes and 98% of the polling areas. Chemicals, agriculture and media magnate Andrej Babis, known for his clashes with the EU, got 42.1 percent of the vote.
US President Celebrates 20th Anniversary of AIDS Initiative
January 28 marked a major milestone in the global fight to end the AIDS epidemic, as the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the largest commitment ever made by a nation to fight the disease, celebrated its 20th anniversary. Started by former President George W. Bush, PEPFAR has spanned four administrations, has operations in more than 50 countries, and has helped increase access to HIV prevention tools and treatments.
Rates are biggest hike in decades and no improvement
The U.S. economy grew at a healthy pace in the fourth quarter, despite growing signs of a slowdown in underlying demand as the biggest rate hike in decades threatens growth this year. Gross domestic product grew at an annualized rate of 2.9% in the final three months of 2022, following a 3.2% rise in the third quarter, according to a preliminary estimate from the Commerce Department on Jan. 26. Personal consumption, the largest component of the economy, grew at a slower-than-expected 2.1%. Economists see the economy shrinking in the second and third quarters, with a 65% chance of a recession next year, according to Bloomberg’s latest monthly survey.
