At least four dead in Pennsylvania after factory explosion

On 24 March, a massive explosion at the RM Palmer chocolate factory in West Reading killed and injured several people and others are missing. West Reading Police Chief Wayne Holborn said the cause of the blast was under investigation. Four people had died as of Sunday morning, and three others who were believed to be at the plant when the explosion occurred were still missing. A third body was pulled from the rubble on March 25 and a fourth victim was found earlier on March 26.

Honduras ends ties with Taiwan after turning to China

Honduras has decided to sever ties with Taiwan, its foreign ministry said on March 25, announcing an expected move by the Central American country following its decision to establish diplomatic ties with China. The foreign ministry said in a statement that President Theo Mara Castro had directed Taiwan to be notified of the decision to sever diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Putin says Russia will deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus

President Vladimir Putin said Russia was preparing to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in neighboring Belarus, intensifying its confrontation with the United States and its allies over the war in Ukraine. In comments broadcast on state television on March 25, Putin said Moscow had not transferred arms control to Belarus and would not violate its nonproliferation obligations under an agreement with Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko.

McConnell ends treatment and continues to work from home

Cuba holds national assembly elections amid population exodus

Cuba held elections on March 26 to elect lawmakers, as the ruling Communist Party struggled to contain public anger over rampant inflation, starvation and power outages. The vote, condemned by human rights groups as sham, selected 470 candidates who were pre-selected by the government for a five-year term in the powerful National Assembly. This system has allowed the Communist Party to control the parliament since its establishment in 1976.

Mississippi tornado death toll rises as more storms forecast

The death toll has risen to at least 26, with 25 dead in the poorest state of Mississippi alone, after a devastating tornado ripped through the southern United States on Friday, Civil Defense said on March 26. Dozens were injured, while at least one person died in neighboring Alabama, according to media reports. The weather service warned of more storms. Initial reports put the death toll at at least 23.
