Nearly 90% of Ukrainians oppose territorial concessions to Russia: report | World News

[ad_1]

Some 87 percent of Ukrainians oppose any territorial concessions to Russia, an increase from previous polls, according to a poll released Thursday by Ukraine’s top pollster.

Surveys conducted by the International Institute of Sociology in Kyiv show that the vast majority of Ukrainians in every region oppose their country giving up territory under any circumstances, even if it means prolonging the war.

The figure marks an increase in opposition to territorial concessions recorded in the previous KIIS survey, up from 84% in July and 82% in May.

The latest survey, which polled 2,000 people between September 7 and 13, coincides with a Ukrainian counteroffensive that has recaptured swathes of northeastern Kharkiv, boosting national morale and boosting further ahead of winter. The hope of gaining territory enters.

However, despite recent progress, Russian troops still control about 20 percent of Ukraine’s territory.

Polls show that 57 percent of Ukrainian Russians and 85 percent of Russian-speaking Ukrainians oppose territorial concessions to Moscow. Only 24 percent of ethnic Russians support giving up land for peace, the report showed.

The figures contradict one of the reasons Moscow claims to have launched a so-called “special military operation” in Ukraine on February 24. Russian President Vladimir Putin said part of the move was to protect Russian speakers who were threatened by what he described as dangerous nationalists. Ukraine.

Kyiv and its allies rejected that claim, arguing instead that Russia was waging a baseless war of conquest.
