Police will soon start investigating the citizenship of Rabi Lamichhane, whose Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) won a surprisingly large mandate in polls for a party formed a few months ago.
Police said they would investigate complaints made under the direction of the chief district officer, saying Lamichhane had allegedly continued to hold Nepali citizenship illegally despite having obtained U.S. citizenship years ago.
Ramihane publicly renounced his American citizenship at the U.S. embassy two years ago when asked by reporters if he held the permits required for U.S. citizens to work in Nepal.
However, there have been complaints that Lamichhane did not go through the necessary procedures to regain his Nepalese citizenship after he renounced his U.S. citizenship.
The issue snowballed after former TV anchor Lamichhane launched the RSP in July and gained a huge mandate in the November 20 election.
With 21 seats, the party is the fourth largest party in the 275-member House of Representatives.
“We cannot say exactly how long the investigation will take to complete,” police said, but any lead into further doubts about the veracity of his citizenship and the ensuing natural legal process could lead to his disqualification or suspension from membership in the House Eligibility until a court decision.
The Electoral Commission had earlier dealt with the complaint, saying the issue ended with last month’s election.
