Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video increasingly regulated in UK after new government bill

[ad_1]

Streaming platforms including Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video are set to be more regulated in the UK after the government released a new draft media bill.

New rules will be introduced to bring the platforms under the purview of Ofcom, the UK media watchdog, which currently oversees public and private broadcasters. According to a press release from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (CMS) shortly before the latest draft was released, the new Ofcom “content code” aims to “protect viewers from a wider range of harmful material – such as misleading health claims”. These changes come as viewing habits and technology rapidly change the needs and practices of the screen industry. Linear viewership among 16-24 year olds has fallen by 68% since 2011, according to Ofcom figures.

The draft media bill also includes new protections for public service broadcasters such as the BBC and ITV, ensuring that their on-demand services, such as iPlayer and ITVX, can be easily discovered on smart TVs.

“Technology has revolutionized the way people enjoy television and radio,” said Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer. “The battle to attract and retain viewers has never been greater. The UK leads the world in content and production, but changing viewing habits are putting traditional broadcasters under unprecedented pressure. These new laws will provide global streaming giants with Leveling the playing field, ensuring they meet the same high standards we expect from public service broadcasters, and ensuring services like iPlayer and ITVX are easy to find no matter how you watch TV.”
