It’s been 25 years since Reed Hastings and Mark Randolph started DVD movie rentals Netflixwhich will eventually transform into a multi-billion dollar business.
To celebrate the Jubilee, the streamer released a short commemorative video (see below) detailing Netflix’s journey from DVD mailer to the world’s first major streaming platform. The video, titled “The Netflix Story,” features commercials from the old company, explaining how DVD rentals work before showing how the rapid rise of the internet made streaming possible.
“The binge became our new way of seeing things, and it gave everyone something to say,” said the video’s narrator. The trailer then features clips from some of Netflix’s biggest and most memorable shows, including orange is the new black, bridgeton, Stranger Thingsand squid game.
The video also talks about the connection viewers have with many of Netflix’s shows and movies, highlighting the Stranger Things Cosplayers, fun (and dangerous) bird box Challenge video, after chess hits The Queen’s ConspiracyOf course, it definitely refers to the popular internet slang “Netflix and chill”.
“That’s the thing about Netflix; you never know what’s going to happen next,” the narrator teases at the end of the video.
OG Streamer is hoping for another 25 years of success, especially after the first dip in subscribers this year. With increasing competition from other streaming platforms such as Disney+, Apple TV+ and Prime Video, the once-lonely streaming platforms now find themselves locked in a fierce battle for content and subscriptions.
Still, Netflix remains the global streaming market leader with 220 million subscribers — 20 million more than Amazon, 15 million more than Disney, and 180 million more than Apple.
