The newest concert and event space in St. Louis is a mid-sized space called The Hawthorn on the Midtown West Side. The newest addition to the city’s music and events scene kicked off Thursday night with a free grand opening party with renowned St. Louis hip-hop artist Mvstermind and DJ Mahf.
Capable of accommodating 1,300 standing guests, what sets the space apart from its neighbors is its size. According to Nashville-based venue owner Marathon Live, The Hawthorn is designed to provide artists and the public a spacious and intimate space for concerts, weddings and other events.
“There is a gap in the market in St. Louis. From a venue that can accommodate 500 people to a larger space that can accommodate more than 2,000 people, especially in that part of the city, there is no event space that can fill that gap,” Marathon Live Communications director Jerry Mi Hicks said.
The history of the building is a bit of a mystery to Marathon Live. Located in a renovated 1950s Ford or Chevy dealership and auto body shop, Hawthorn has a dark, moody and retro vibe, according to Hicks.
“We want The Hawthorn to be a blank canvas for our clients,” he said. Despite its inherent characteristics, the space is large and open enough to allow event clients to create any environment they want.

Future events at The Hawthorn include hosting country music duo Muscadine Bloodline, donuts and Santa events, wedding vendor shows and fashion shows.
“I’m excited to see that because they’re going to have a stage in the middle of the floor. It’s going to have a runway and stuff like that. It’s going to be amazing,” Hicks said.
