For those of you who don’t like bar hopping, FOMO has you covered, the experience of having multiple venues in one place.
Set to open at 165 N. High St. on Halloween weekend in Columbus, FOMO (an acronym for “Fear of Missing”) will offer customers a new immersive experience by offering a variety of activities to keep them entertained and Never miss out, says Brandon Adams, FOMO’s creative director.
“We have several different spaces within our 9,000-square-foot facility that allow you to drink in one area, dance in one area, sing karaoke or smoke a hookah in another,” Adams said. “So, we just wanted to provide a diverse environment, not just your daily nightlife.”
Adams said the bar was inspired by the shared experience of being away from friends and feeling as if you might be missing something important.
“When you’re looking at social media or on your phone, the fear of missing out comes from FOMO,” Adams said. “You’re in a place where your friends aren’t and you want to be there.”
Adams said he finds Columbus’s out-of-home culture alive and well, and said he plans to give people a reason to stay at FOMO, not just for drinking.
“I personally think Columbus is very fond of hopping bars. They don’t have any space where people want to go and stay, or encourage people to stay for more than a drink,” Adams said.
Adams said FOMO was designed to create an environment that felt like a social lounge and not necessarily a nightclub.
“We wanted to create a very bold, dynamic, resort-like environment. Very social media driven and technology driven, which a lot of bars don’t have,” Adams said. “I wouldn’t necessarily model us as a nightclub, but a social lounge.”
The tech-driven approach includes tablets where people can type their name into karaoke, Adams said, and they hope to become the main bar for major sporting events.
“When there’s a big sporting event, we host it. We’re right down the street from Ohio State, right down the street from a football field,” Adams said. “So, of course, we do live broadcasts. We have LED screens on the walls, TVs and projectors. So, there’s a lot of visual stuff to keep abreast of what’s going on.”
Although FOMO does not plan to provide in-house food, Austin Lucas-Mattox, who is in charge of FOMO’s finances and legality, said food trucks will be provided.
“That’s exactly what’s working for us right now,” Lucas-Martox said. “Given the cost and the benefit and all of that, bringing in a food truck is better than having a kitchen on-site.”
FOMO also has a variety of spaces available for booking private events, Lucas-Mattox said.
For updates on opening ceremonies and more, FOMO is available on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok or directly on FOMO’s website.
