Considered by many to be the beginning of modern theatre, George Buchner’s unfinished play of 1837 Wojsek Follow a poor soldier who is undergoing medical experiments and tormented by the resulting hallucinations. Meanwhile, his girlfriend — who is also the mother of his newborn child — is having an affair with a higher-ranking peer.Filled with dark comedy and expressionist drama, Mr. Rabout’s powerful adaptation contains gleaming darkness Wojsekthe violent, erotic, inhuman world, uncompromisingly making it his own. He imbued the classic with his unique intensity and moral vision as he brought it to its nightmarish end.
Originally presented by Theater for the New City in the early 2000s, Matt Okin’s Cherry Hill greatly affected WojsekSet in a small Maryland town outside Washington, D.C., in 1990, this surprising ensemble comedy tells the story of a TV generation unable to escape the shackles of suburban society. From The Black Box’s own art director, Cherry Hill explores a young man’s determined and desperate attempt to find truth and love in the chaotic lives of people in the past and now.
Neil LaBute is an award-winning playwright, filmmaker and screenwriter. His plays include: bash, shape of things, distance from here, mercy seat, fat pig (Olivier Award Nominee for Best Comedy), Some girls, a reason to be Pretty (Tony Award Nominated for Best Drama), In the forest, dark and deepa new adaptation Miss Julieand reason to be happy. black box is a 501c3 non-profit organization located in Northern New Jersey. The collaborative team of theater artists has been transformed during the pandemic, and the company has become a New Jersey incubator for new and under-produced productions by world-class artists. Black Box began developing Eric Bogosian’s 1+1 in New Jersey in November 2021; it received a special New York City premiere last July, while an early ’23 off-Broadway premiere is in the works. Additionally, Black Box’s 21-22 seasons include legendary filmmaker Paul Schrader’s Cleopatra Club, Broadway’s Craig Lucas’ Ode to Joy, and Beth Henry’s recent world premiere. The soon-to-be-announced full 2022-2023 season will include revival classics with Broadway estates and off-Broadway legends, as well as contemporary plays and musicals with creators.
