New Recreation Center near Fluor Field

[ad_1]

The newest entertainment complex in downtown Greenville will open this week. It is called District 356 and is adjacent to Fluor Field on Field Street. We first introduced you to the complex in February 2021, when Greenville city leaders unanimously passed an ordinance creating the project. (Watch story above) The goal is to create a pedestrian-friendly environment around the ballpark and continue to drive foot traffic to the West End area on game days and beyond. The area is modeled after Jersey Street at Boston’s Fenway Park. The video below shows the renderings presented in 2021: “It’s an inspiration for Fenway Park and what they’ve accomplished on Jersey Street,” Greenville Boulevard general manager Eric Jalinko said in 2021 express. “The fan experience really starts on the field before you even walk into it, and that’s really what we’re trying to achieve here.” District 356 will expand on Fluor Field’s many special events and community celebrations. “We don’t think this is just a Greenville Drive or baseball proposal,” said Beth Brotherton, a spokeswoman for the City of Greenville, when the project was announced. “We see this as a space for festivals, events. A place where people can gather, have picnics, eat or have concerts or other musical events.” So what’s behind the name? Area 356 refers to shoeless Joe Jackson’s lifetime batting average in the major leagues. The area will also serve as a passageway between the adjacent condominium project The .408, which itself is a tribute to Jackson’s batting average — especially his 1911 season. The grand opening and ribbon-cutting are scheduled for Wednesday and will coincide with The Drive’s annual Green Day celebration to commemorate the founding of the city of Greenville.
