After two and a half years of Covid-19 precautions, social distancing guidelines and strict mask regulations, the UAE finally lifted the mandatory mask requirement for almost all public and indoor spaces on September 28.

Dubai Airports will make face masks an optional feature for passengers at Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Dubai World Centre (DWC) following an announcement by the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA).

Now, Abu Dhabi International Airport has also announced that all passengers passing through the airport will have the option to wear masks. Authorities will continue to adhere to Covid-19 precautions, including social distancing, sterilization and prevention guidelines.

According to the airport, the wearing of masks on board is optional or mandatory as specified by the airline. Earlier, all Emirates-based airlines had confirmed that it was not mandatory for passengers onboard to wear masks.

However, Etihad Airways said that only passengers flying to China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Maldives, the Philippines, South Korea, Seychelles or Canada will need to wear masks.

Emirates and flydubai also clarified that for passengers travelling from or transiting through Dubai Airport, the Covid safety rules at their destination will apply throughout their journey. This means that airlines will require passengers to wear face coverings if the final destination requires them.
