New warning over UAE WhatsApp drug delivery scheme

[ad_1]

Public shopping via illegal WhatsApp drug delivery service He could face up to six months in prison and a Dh50,000 fine, a legal expert has warned.

Authorities are trying to shut down the web and ban criminals from sending unsolicited messages to facilitate the sale of items such as illegal painkillers, marijuana and methamphetamine.

In March, Dubai Police said 100 drug Traffickers have been arrested as part of the fight against cybercriminals.

Criminals often share GPS coordinates of the locations of drugs, which are often buried underground in remote areas, the force said.

Emirati lawyer Mohammed Al Najjar said severe penalties have been imposed to deter people from taking drugs.

“Emirati lawmakers are aware of new ways to sell and buy drugs and have added a clause on narcotics and psychotropic substances in the new Law No. 30 of 2021 to crack down on buyers,” Mr Al Najjar told National.

“Section 74 of the Act states that a person convicted of a crime will be restricted from sending or depositing money to others for two years after serving their sentence. Such a punishment would make people think twice before committing a crime.”

Those who sell and promote illegal drugs through online channels can be fined up to Dh1 million in addition to jail time.

A Dubai resident, who asked not to be named, said he received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number offering illegal substances.

“The message was in Arabic and the sender offered to sell tramadol, marijuana, Lyrica and methamphetamine. I was shocked and didn’t know what to do,” the resident said.

He googled the sender’s number and found it was in Pakistan.

he said Dubai Policewho asked him to screenshot the messages and report them through their electronic crime platform before blocking the number.

“I’ve heard this information before, but didn’t expect to receive it,” he added. “I ignored the message and blocked the number. This is a new, easy way to promote drugs.”

Dubai Police said parents should speak to their children and tell them what to do if they receive such information.
