A New Zealand family who bought some discarded items from a storage room returned home to find the bodies of two children hidden in two suitcases, New Zealand police said.
Detective Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Vaaelua said the children, aged between five and 10, had been dead for many years and the suitcases had been stored for at least three to four years.
He said the investigation was in its early stages but would be rigorous.
“This includes determining where, when and how,” Mr Vaaelua told reporters in Auckland.
The family bought the personal and household items at an online auction last week and hauled them home.
Mr Vaaelua stressed they had nothing to do with the deaths and was understandably distressed by their findings.
Police first established a crime scene at the Oakland home last week and launched a homicide investigation, but details of the case were not revealed until Thursday.
Mr Vaaelua said the identification process for the children was ongoing, but they had relatives living in New Zealand.
He also said police had contacted Interpol and overseas police agencies – a possible indication that police may believe the suspect or suspects are now living abroad.
“The investigation team is working to hold accountable those responsible for the deaths of these children,” Mr Vaaelua said.
He said it was a tricky case for the investigation team.
“No matter how many years you serve and investigate such horrific cases, it’s not an easy task,” he said.
“I am a parent of young children myself. But we have work to do.”
