As the investigation of the case continues, health officials urge people to wear masks on public transportation.
After a person in Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, tested positive, New Zealand reported its first case of COVID-19 in the community within six months.
The Ministry of Health said in a statement on Tuesday that the link between the case and the border or administrative isolation has not been determined, adding that the case is currently under investigation.
The last community case of COVID-19 reported in New Zealand was in February.
The statement said that the Auckland Regional Public Health Department is conducting interviews with the infected to trace contacts.
The Auckland Department of Transport said anyone who took public transport on Tuesday or was unable to maintain social distancing in public places should wear a mask as a precaution.
“Once more information is collected to confirm the response, the ministers will meet this afternoon,” it added.
New Zealand’s tough response to the pandemic has helped it virtually eliminate COVID-19 at home, allowing people to live without restrictions, even though its international borders remain largely closed.
The country has reported approximately 2,500 confirmed coronavirus cases and 26 related deaths.
