According to Weinraub, the act of play is “not limited to children,” but that as adults, “we still crave elements of play that we experience throughout our lives.” According to him, “games have evolved” as technology has developed. NFTs, especially in games, highlight this layer of ownership through play.
Weinraub and Cryptoys’ theory is that “adults are just looking for ways to feel like kids again.” Weinraub puts the question of “how games evolve” at the forefront, which he says is a core tenet of his experience with games evolution.
Weinraub highlights how the Internet has profoundly advanced games and games, from action figures to watching his children build virtual worlds in Roblox. According to him, players are no longer limited to their neighborhood or geographic location.
Weinraub emphasized that the content of the game is “very, very different” than games from previous decades, leaning more towards “social games” regardless of geographic barriers.
Weinraub acknowledged that this is the case when asked about children’s and young people’s concerns about their comfort level with digital interactions compared to real-life social interactions. However, he said that while it can “affect some people, it can also amplify some of it.”
According to Weinraub, the development of games seems to be shifting towards more “social games” and in many ways can be designed to “enhance communication skills”.
The future of gaming and cryptocurrencies
When asked about the role of in-game cryptocurrencies and token economics in blockchain games, Weinraub said he strongly believes they are “an important foundation for blockchain games.”
There was a degree of “exuberance” in the first creation and testing of the earn-to-play model, and Weinraub credits the pioneers who initially sailed these uncharted waters. The industry could be “very fertile ground for development over the next year or so,” which Weinraub believes will ultimately “reboot the token-based economy and gaming in a healthier, sustainable way.”

When discussing in-game tokens and their current uses, Weinraub noted how “the current state of the Web3 economy is based on tokenization”. Regarding the next generation adopting and engaging with tokenization and ownership, Weinraub described how it is “very important and in the right way.”
