The National Security Commissioner said the army was attacked before forcing the attackers to retreat.

The gunmen attacked a village in Kaduna State in northwestern Nigeria, killing at least 34 people and injuring 7 others.

“Unidentified gunmen attacked the Madamai village of Kaura… 34 residents have been confirmed dead after the attack. Seven other people were injured,” National Security Commissioner Samuel Arouwan said on Monday, adding that the attack took place. Later on Sunday.

He said that after the fierce confrontation, the troops were attacked and then forced the attackers to retreat.

Arouan added that the two suspects are being questioned in connection with the attack.

Also on Sunday, the gunmen attacked a church in the Kachia district of Kaduna State.

“One person was killed and some believers were seriously injured,” Arouwan said in a separate statement.

For years, criminal groups called bandits by the locals have been intimidating in northwest and central Nigeria, but in recent months they have become more unscrupulous and the military has resumed operations in the area.

These bandits attacked villages, stole cattle, kidnapped for blackmail and burned down houses.

Earlier this month, the military began to take action against them, and the northern states imposed restrictions on movement and trade and telecommunications blackouts in an attempt to contain them.
