The immediate highlight of Ninja Week, June 1-5, is a different ball than you’re used to and an irresistible fashion show at the Taubman Museum of Art. Accompanying these events is a Soul Food Picnic at Wasena Park on Saturday afternoons. This week’s event will fund the Roanoke Diversity Center, which strongly supports its large and growing LGBTQ+ community. It is the only LGBTQ+ community center in the area.
Among other services, about a quarter of the donation-run Diversity Center’s 320 free events a year help families deal with historical and legal discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community.
The star of the Taubman Show is the ballroom show, featuring male, female and non-binary, gay, transgender and straight, black, brown and white performers in striking costumes in a stunning light show in the show. Members are $15, nonmembers are $20, and on-site is $25.
Performers include Javier Ninja (Javi Madrid), who shared the stage with Madonna, and Archie Ninja, who played a major role in “Paris Is Burning,” as well as HBO Max’s “Legends” and four Hulu shows The Deloris Ninja Emmy Award-winning episode “Pose.”
Evolving from drag entertainment, dance halls have a huge following across the country for their spectacle, energy and positive message. “It originated from the drag movement, but it wasn’t just the little sister of drag,” says publicist Elizabeth Parsons. “The ballroom welcomes a variety of performers.”
Soul Food Cookout will be held on June 5th from 1-4pm and asks for donations for meals.
