Nokia, etisalat by e& demonstrate first 100 Gbps fiber optic broadband

[ad_1]

Nokia has announced that it has partnered with Etisalat UAE (e& branded etisalat) to demonstrate the fastest Passive Optical Network (PON) speed in the Middle East and Africa region.

Nokia Bell Labs’ PON proof-of-concept (PoC) demonstration achieves speeds of up to 100 gigabits per second (Gb/s) on a single wavelength – four times faster than today’s most advanced networks.

The two technology leaders have achieved a number of industry firsts during their long-term collaboration, including the world’s first single-carrier terabit-per-second field trial, setting a record optical transmission capacity for the UAE’s e&fiber network on etisalat .

DSP technology

To achieve 100 Gb/s on a single wavelength, Nokia Bell Labs used pioneering digital signal processing (DSP) technology. Once advanced DSP is adopted, the steps to 50G and 100G are simple, and 100G can be commercially available in the 2030s.

The Nokia Bell Labs 100G PON prototype is the world’s first application of flexible rate transmission in a PON network. Flexible rate transmission works by grouping optical fiber modems (ONUs) with similar physical network characteristics (such as loss or dispersion) to improve data transmission efficiency. Using flexible rate transport reduces latency on the PON and cuts power consumption in half—two fundamental characteristics of fiber optic networks, which play a rapidly growing role in the mass delivery of fixed and mobile broadband services.

This PoC is Nokia’s latest fiber access industry first after XGS-PON, TWDM-PON and 25G PON. 100G PON may be commercially available in the 2030s.

Rapid development

Marwan Bin Shakar, Senior Vice President/Access Network Development, etisalat by e& said: “Fiber optic networks are rapidly evolving into the backbone of the entire telecom industry as they play an important role in delivering any service to any endpoint, including residential, business and mobile Sites. As use cases evolve, they must become faster, smarter and more cost-effective.

“Our partnership with Nokia demonstrates our commitment to maximize value for our customers and bring positive change to their lives in the digital age. Through our partnership, we look forward to continuing our efforts to bring come with best-in-class solutions and adopt innovative technological solutions in the UAE and the region.”

Samer Makke, Head of Nokia’s etisalat by e& UAE Accounts Team, said: “etisalat by e& is a pioneer operator in the region and we are proud to be presenting our industry-first prototype technology with the company. Enterprise customers, high-end consumers play a key role in providing services and supporting 5G rollout. 10G XGS-PON is now mainstream; the first 25G cities are a reality; 50G and 100G are in development. This just shows the unlimited potential of fiber broadband .”– trade arab news agency
