North Korea has criticized South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol’s pro-U.S. policies, calling them aggressive and excessive after the leader’s recent visit to Washington.

Citing media reports in China and Russia, North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency said international concerns were growing over Yoon’s follow-up.

If the president continues to ignore these concerns, South Korea “will face retaliation, which will cause greater damage in the economic and security fields, and it will be a nightmare for Yoon and his country,” KCNA said.

Yoon met U.S. President Joe Biden last week as the allies announced the so-called Washington Declaration, which outlines steps to strengthen security on the Korean peninsula. This includes measures such as more frequent deployment of U.S. nuclear submarines and South Korea’s involvement in strategic planning for nuclear contingencies.

KCNA said Yoon misled South Koreans into saying the trip to the U.S. had achieved “huge results,” calling it “fool’s gold.”

The South Korean leader will meet Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Seoul on Sunday.

South Korea and Japan have been stepping up efforts to rebuild relations that have soured over the past few years. The two countries held their first formal summit in 12 years in March, followed by a security dialogue in April and a meeting of finance ministers this week.

“Kishida and Biden do not vote, but the public in this land votes,” KCNA said.
