North Korea’s foreign ministry on Sunday criticized the U.N. secretary-general’s recent comments about his support for North Korea’s complete denuclearization, saying they lacked impartiality and fairness.
North Korea’s state news agency, KCNA, issued a foreign ministry statement after U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a meeting with South Korean President Yoon Si-yeol on Friday that he fully supported North Korea’s efforts to fully denuclearize.
“I deeply regret that the UN Secretary-General’s remarks on the Korean Peninsula issue seriously lack impartiality and fairness and violate the obligations under the UN Charter,” Jin Shan said. Kim said North Korea’s “complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization” (CVID) was a “violation of North Korea’s sovereignty,” referring to the initials of the country’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
