North Korea launches unidentified projectiles into the sea: South Korea | Military News

[ad_1]

The launch comes at a time when the United States and South Korea are trying to push North Korea, which possesses nuclear weapons, back to the negotiating table.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said North Korea fired an unidentified projectile into the waters off its east coast on Tuesday.

According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap News Agency, JCS did not provide any other details about the latest launch.

According to Reuters, the Japanese Coast Guard said that North Korea may have launched a missile.

The latest launch coincided with senior officials in the United States and South Korea trying to encourage North Korea to resume negotiations on its prohibited weapons and nuclear program at a deadlock.

“We will seek diplomacy with North Korea to make tangible progress and strengthen the security of the United States and our allies,” Kim Sung, the U.S. special representative for North Korea, said in a statement after meeting with his South Korean counterpart in Washington. The heads of intelligence agencies from the United States, South Korea and Japan are scheduled to meet in Seoul on Tuesday to discuss the situation with North Korea.

Since the collapse of the summit between then-U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Vietnam in February 2019, negotiations on North Korea’s nuclear program have been stalled. The meeting between the two in the demilitarized zone failed to achieve a breakthrough.

Since then, Pyongyang has intensified its weapons testing-Kim Jong Un said this is necessary for his country’s “self-defense”. The country conducted a series of tests last month, including what it calls hypersonic missiles.

The current US President Joe Biden reviewed the North Korean policy when he took office in January this year and emphasized that the US is open to negotiations.
