North Korea said it held a late-night military parade | Military News

[ad_1]

The official media said that leader Kim Jong-un hosted the event, which was the third such demonstration in less than a year.

North Korean official media stated that North Korea has held a military parade in Pyongyang to commemorate the anniversary of the founding of the nation.

KCNA stated that leader Kim Jong-un attended a commemorative event in the Kim Il Sung Square in the capital Pyongyang early on Thursday morning.

This military parade will be the third such demonstration held in less than a year by this nuclear-weapon country.

In its diplomatic contacts in recent years, Pyongyang has continued to promote its nuclear and ballistic missile programs under international sanctions, and has used such incidents to show off its latest missile developments.

An official from the South Korean Ministry of Defense told Agence France-Presse that “there are signs that North Korea has held a military parade.”

It is not clear which military systems are included in the parade.

“We are monitoring the situation closely,” the official added. “More details need further analysis.”

In October last year, Kim Jong Un demonstrated an unprecedented intercontinental ballistic missile at a military parade before dawn. This was the first demonstration of the country’s long-range weapons in two years.

Another night military parade was held in January.

The submarine-launched ballistic missile, which the Korean Central News Agency called “the most powerful weapon in the world,” was at the core of the incident, which occurred a few days before Joe Biden became president of the United States.

The professional website NK News quoted a source in Pyongyang as saying that at about midnight, the fireworks in the city center were set off again at 1 am (16:00 GMT), and the plane flew overhead. Both of these were consistent with ongoing operations. The parade was unanimous.

Thursday is the 73rd anniversary of the founding of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, because North Korea’s official name is North Korea.

By noon in the morning, North Korean state media had not released photos of the parade.

Hong Min, a senior researcher at the South Korean National Unification Research Institute in Seoul, said analysts said that Pyongyang hopes to send a “message” to the international community through the military parade without risking escalation.

He told Agence France-Presse: “The only other way to show off their strategic weapons is to launch them, which risks triggering protests and further international sanctions.”

He added, “North Korea must feel the need to pressure the United States to enter the negotiating table in accordance with its terms.”

Since the Hanoi summit between Kim Jong Un and the then-U.S. President Donald Trump lifted sanctions and North Korea was willing to give up in return, nuclear negotiations with the United States have been at a standstill.

The Biden administration promised to adopt “practical and targeted methods”, including diplomatic efforts, to persuade impoverished North Korea to abandon its banned weapons program.

Last month, the United Nations Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated that Pyongyang appeared to have activated a reprocessing reactor to produce plutonium in Yongbyon, calling it a “deeply disturbing” development. Kim Jong-un’s sister and main adviser, Kim Yo-jung Request the U.S. military to withdraw from Yongbyon. peninsula.

At the same time, North Korea is struggling under a self-imposed coronavirus lockdown, closing its borders to prevent the spread of COVID-19, which first appeared in neighboring China.

Hong Min added that in the country, the demonstration is an opportunity to boost morale and “the unity of the masses of the regime.”

“In the dead of night, it provides the public with something to enjoy and watch fireworks, air shows and advanced weapons displays.”
