art Center exist NYU Abu Dhabi announced a series of music, theatermovies and dance Events next month and a series of workshops. From cutting-edge dance recitals to immersive jazz performances, here are some to watch.
theater
Director Joanna Settle and playwright Rem Almenhari will present the revival of their 2020 play Al Rahel | leave, It explores what it means to be an Emirati woman.
Spanning themes of innocence, femininity and sadness, the work weaves together Arabic and English poetry in the context of imagery and movement. The show will be on The Black Box on October 1st at 7.30pm and October 2nd at 3pm.
Reem Almenhali will also host an interactive workshop exploring her approach to translating poetry into dramatic scenes. Participants will engage in a series of exercises that guide them through their creative process.The seminar will be October 10 at 6:30 pm in art center.
Joanna Settle will discuss her work in theatre and opera in her presentation Exploring the Director’s Approach October 11th at 6:30 pm. Drawing on her experience in the US and UAE, she will explore how directors develop and present live performances, and some of the challenges they face along the way.
Movie
Jordanian filmmaker Zaid Abu Hamdan to screen his film Abdul Rahman’s daughter October 3 at 7:30pm, followed by Discussion in the Blue Hall. The film centers on four estranged sisters who are drawn together when their father suddenly disappears and is forced to confront a buried secret.
music
Grammy-nominated saxophonist and bandleader Ravi Coltrane will present an interactive, in-depth masterclass entitled Cosmic Music: Contemporary Exploration of the Music of John and Alice Coltrane. Covering his craft skills and techniques, the event will take place on October 5th at 6.30pm.
The next day at 7.30pm, Coltrane will re-enact the seminal music of his parents John and Alice Coltrane, two of jazz’s greatest pioneers, at the Red Theatre.
dance
The dance workshop will be held on October 24th at 6:30pm.title Day turns to night) by Cie Herve Koubi and supported by Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels, will take participants through some of the fundamentals of urban and contemporary dance.
Two days later, at 7.30pm at the Red Theatre, participants can immerse themselves in Day turns to night Dance performances blend capoeira and other martial arts with urban dance and imagery from oriental painting and Islamic architecture. With mysterious and hypnotic choreography, Herve Koubi will relive his personal history through the story of a young boy in Yasmina Khadra’s novel.
