NYU Summer Institute is a cross-cultural program aimed at raising the academic profile of highly motivated Emirati high school students who are about to start their 11th grade. The program features intensive instruction in critical thinking and writing, mathematical reasoning, college readiness and success, standardized test preparation, and leadership development and public speaking over two summer and middle school year courses.
Following a highly competitive admission process, as many as 54 program participants were selected as recipients of the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholarship for Outstanding High School Students, which enables them to attend the Summer Institute.
Program goals:
- College Preparation – Through an 18-month program, students are instilled with the intellectual resources and skills needed to succeed at a top English-language university.
- Liberal Arts Education – Introduce students to the study of the humanities and the value of a liberal arts education.
- Cultural Awareness – To develop students’ understanding of Western university cultural norms.
- Test preparation – Empower students to excel on the standardized tests required for college admission.

work summary
Instructors will oversee all academic duties for the instruction of critical thinking and writing, including instruction, grading, lesson planning, office hours, and apply to up to two sections of Summer Institute students – students in their first summer and students in their second summer . The program (Summer I and Summer II). Each course will consist of approximately 20 lessons, with hours to be determined in early spring 2023. Instructors will also support the planned activities of the Summer Institute weekend as needed and participate in selection and graduation events as needed.
main duty
- Work within an existing CTW curriculum that focuses on developing the reading and writing skills that form the foundation of a liberal arts education.Areas of study include: examining writing technique and structure, analyzing evidence to create and develop interpretations of texts, reading comprehension practices, gathering and evaluating evidence, development of evidence-based interpretive claims, building logical narrative structure arguments, and the role of texts in the world around us application
- Attend any pre-program meetings and/or training sessions
- Teaching CTW courses in Abu Dhabi to the Class of 2023 and 2024
- Participate in teacher meetings by providing detailed feedback on student progress
- Work closely with co-instructors to ensure that both cohorts receive the same material delivered in a similar high-quality approach
- Available to individual students and groups in need, and to other faculty working on cross-curricular or collaborative projects
- Participate in extra-curricular activities and activities throughout the program and provide assistance as needed, which will entail leading small groups of students on excursions and trips, or supporting program operations as necessary
- Provide ongoing and regular feedback (oral and written) to students in the classroom
- Submit extensive and detailed written feedback on each student within 30 days of the summer session for use in drafting letters of recommendation for their college applications

Required education, certification, licensing or training
- An advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in English or a related discipline
- In-person classes available in Abu Dhabi on the following dates
- Able to provide online instruction during the dates listed above when required

- Advanced degree in English or a related discipline
- College-level English teaching experience
Required work and related experience
- Demonstrate an interest in intercultural education and a passion for teaching
- Experience mentoring high school students in extracurricular activities (i.e. summer camp or after school activities)
- Assistance in managing the program prior to classes in Abu Dhabi
Preferred work and related experience
- Work or internship experience teaching English to non-native speakers
- Familiar with online teaching
