Charlotte – the city of Charlotte, with Arts and Culture Advisory Councilhas awarded grants to two arts and culture initiatives: “Brooklyn: Collective Memory” and Charlotte International Arts Exchange.
“Brooklyn: Collective Memory”
As part of the Charlotte International Arts Festival, it will open to the public on September 29 and will run through October 8, “Brooklyn: Collective Memory” Exhibition Commemorating Brooklyn, Charlotte’s once vibrant black Wall Street.
The interactive experience invites people to learn about Brooklyn’s history through life-size portraits, archival books, and videos of former residents sharing their stories. Creative director and curator Justin Hicks, co-curator and experience lead Tyler Capel, and strategist and photographer Sam Hoggs aim to illuminate the impact of urban renewal, displacement, and moving people in and out of space as infrastructure develops.
Charlotte International Art Exchange Center
The new Charlotte International Arts Exchange Program will bring a group of Charlotte artists to Kenya in 2023, where they will interact with Kenyan artists and culture. In turn, artists from Kenya will travel to Charlotte for a similar cultural exchange.
In Charlotte and Kenya, artists will learn new skills, enhance their creativity and increase their exposure by exhibiting and selling their work. Charlotte’s exhibition and educational opportunities will be open to the public.Additionally, the Exchange Program Coordinator led by Joanne Rogers Ninety Eight Nine Studio Galleryhas pledged to donate a portion of art sales to community service organizations in Charlotte.
