[ad_1]

Etihad is a very fitting name for an airline operating in the UAE. The country is made up of a federation of seven emirates, each governed individually. Every major airline operating in the UAE is based in one of the emirates, but of course serves all of them. “United” Emirates is an apt description for an airline.

Etihad Airways was established in 2003

Etihad Airways used to be Founded in 2003. It was established by Royal Decree of the Royal Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The order to establish the airline came from Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He is the eldest son of the UAE’s first president, Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and became president himself in 2004.

It acquired a 25% stake in the airline (along with shares in the Kingdom of Bahrain, the State of Qatar and the Sultanate of Oman) in 1974. Etihad means alliance in Arabic

Etihad Airways’ name choice is easier to understand in the context of changing ownership of the airline in the region and changing services. Etihad comes from the Arabic word “إتحاد” (ittihad), meaning “union” or “federation”.

This refers to the union of seven emirates. Of course, it can also refer to alliances with other countries and regions – very relevant to the size the airline has grown to today.

Founder Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan appears to have started the airline with a vision of uniting the emirate. Many people today think of the UAE as just one country (and it is), but prior to 1971 it consisted of seven separate emirates – Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Saudi Arabia Gawain and Umm Al Quwain. Bringing these together is the start of an important collaboration – and airline services are part of it.

The UAE is still one of only a few regions today owns two national airlines, or “Flag Carriers”, Etihad Airways and Emirates. Emirates’ name also reflects the alliance of several emirates.

The two airlines are not alone.low cost airlines air arabia, is headquartered in the emirate of Sharjah, but also operates in Abu Dhabi. In the past, Ras Al Khaimah operated an airline called RAK Airways.
