Oscar-winning singer and actress Erin Cara dies at 63

American singer and actress Irene Cara has died at the age of 63. Her publicist, Judith A. Moose, broke the sad news via Kara’s Twitter account. The Oscar-winning entertainer breathed her last at her home in Miami, Florida. However, her cause of death has not been revealed.

“This is the absolute worst part about being a PR guy. I can’t believe I have to write this, let alone make the news. Please share your thoughts and memories of Erin. I will be reading every single one of them , and know she’s smiling from heaven. She adores her fans,” said Judith A Moose.

She added: “Eileen’s family has requested privacy as they process their grief. She was a talented soul and her legacy will live on forever through her music and films. A funeral is imminent and plans are in place for her funeral at a future date. Fans held commemorative events.”

Carla was born in 1959 in the Bronx, New York City, to a Puerto Rican father and a Cuban-American mother. She is the youngest of five children.

She appeared in several Broadway musicals prior to the 1980s. But she rose to fame with Alan Park’s 1980 teen musical “Hall of Fame.” She was originally cast as a dancer, but her role as Coco Hernandez was later rewritten. Her performance was widely acclaimed, earning her first Golden Globe nomination for the role.

In 1983, she co-wrote and sang the song “Flashdance…What a Feeling” from the romantic dance film “Flashdance”. Irene went on to win her first and only Oscar in the Best Original Song category. The song also earned her her first and only Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Cara has not had active acting work for nearly two decades. Her last film was released in 2004 and was titled Downtown: Stories from the Streets. Her last studio album was 2011’s “Irene Cara Presents Hot Caramel”.
