More than 9% of rides requested through the Uber platform in the UAE in Q1 2023 will be emission-free, thus doubling the amount of sustainable travel.

Over the past few years, Uber has offered more sustainable options in the UAE and Jordan, allowing riders to request travel through the app using a pure electric vehicle under the UberGreen option, and will make its first in the region in 2022. A pledge to make 1 in 4 trips (25%) in the UAE zero-emission by 2030.

“This is just the beginning. We need continued dialogue and collaboration to accelerate the scaling up of this transformation across all countries in our region. We are ready to offer our expertise and technology to do what is right for our planet and for the next generation Making the world a better place,” said Frans Hiemstra, MEA Regional Director and Uber General Manager.

tourists

Tourists from more than 80 different countries visited the MENA region last year, specifically: 86 from Egypt, 82 from Saudi Arabia, 86 from the United Arab Emirates and 85 from Qatar, according to Uber.

Growth in tourism and the impact of public-private partnerships for mega-events have also had a positive impact on drivers’ earnings.

The Middle East and North Africa region will witness significant growth, especially in 2022, owing to the region’s potential, diverse cultural richness, young population, and thirst for innovation.

Last year, the region emerged as an attractive destination for major events such as the World Cup in Qatar, further attracting more tourists from around the world.

Flexible Economic Opportunity

Uber’s data also demonstrates continued demand for flexible economic opportunities that enable drivers to meet other commitments and have multiple flexible income streams, especially in the current challenging global macroeconomic conditions.

Of all drivers using the platform, 85% of Egyptian drivers, 97% of Saudi Arabian drivers, 26% of UAE drivers and 27% of Qatari drivers drive less than 30 hours per week using the Uber platform as an additional economic opportunity.

Hiemstra said: “Mena is one of our key regions with the potential to welcome innovative technology and contribute to global business. Our vision for the region is centered around 3 main pillars: For all riders who use our platform Diversifying options for riders, who have just reached 39 million since launching in Mena, making their journeys smoother; Supporting drivers during these unprecedented times by creating new opportunities for additional income; Our platform contributes to the broader goal of making our planet greener by enabling zero emissions.Today, we are proud to share the key 2022-2023 contributions to this vision so far milestone.”

Since launching in the MENA region, Uber has been working on improving the user experience on the app. This resulted in more than 136 million trips requested through the platform across the MENA region, earning it a five-star rating. The company was also able to launch several global firsts in the region, such as UberShuttle, a daily public transport commute product, which grew 1.8 times in Egypt from 2021 to 2022, and expanded to launch another global first, B2B 2022 Serve– trade arab news agency
