Paid critics are destroying Malayalam cinema: Rosshan Andrews | Entertainment News

[ad_1]

There are many conversations brewing in the film industry around the topic of movie reviews in Malayalam movies. Director Rosshan Andrews remains adamant that anyone who tears up a movie on its first day is a sadist. He believes people can criticize a movie constructively, but when it turns into a personal attack, it ceases to be a movie review. Seventeen years into his career, Rosshan Andrews won national awards for his first three films.

When Tamil superstar Suriya started production, his first film (’36 Vayadhinile’) was directed by Roshan Andrews. The director of a new Hindi film starring Shahid Kapoor in Mumbai explains the new trend of paid reviews.

Your comment on the movie review has gotten a lot of flak. Audiences who pay to see a movie have the right to criticize it, right?

I was able to survive 17 years in this industry, thanks to the support of the audience. I’ve never said anything about the audience’s critical opinion of a film. Some people just distorted the opinions I shared in an interview on my YouTube channel during the “Saturday Night” promotion. I am not criticizing the respected listeners of Kerala. I talked about substandard movie reviews. I asked the person who commented if they had written a story. Is the pace of the film set by the critics? The language and style they use is so substandard. They have nothing but ridicule for everyone. Let them read the reviews by Anupama Chopra and Baradwaj Rangan. There used to be a Kozhikodan and Cinic who used to review movies beautifully. Here we have a quote gang. I know people who threaten to post negative reviews and extort money from producers. Some people took Rs 2 lakh and tweeted positive comments.

We have this tendency to ask for opinions in between movies…

YouTube commentators are barging into the venue to solicit viewers’ opinions. Then there will be people who have positive and negative opinions about the movie. Some people show this to producers and blackmail them. If they don’t give money, they’ll just show the movies that make the audience think negatively about the movie. Theater owners should ban these people from the theater. Intermissions will start appearing at the beginning of the film, and there will even be live retrospectives in the future. We should ignore people who approach us with microphones on the first day of the movie. I have asked the producer and theater owner Antony Perumbavoor to ban such people.

It’s important to understand the difference between reviews and criticisms, isn’t it?

Reviews and criticisms are different. The early newspapers used to have good reviews. That’s not a personal attack, just constructive criticism. Here, one expresses disappointment at not being able to make it in the film. They are sadists. I don’t want them to rate my movies. Who gave them the power to rate movies? Those who are looking for YouTube income should stop slaughtering movies to make ends meet. These people who indulge in personal attacks should be outlawed. They don’t need to act as audience advocates to review a movie.

I’m not saying all YouTube critics in Kerala are bad. They are the ones who do constructive criticism. But they are few in number.

You say they don’t criticize Korean movies?

“Parasite” director Bong Joon-ho dedicated to the people of his country after winning an Oscar. It is the Korean people who promote good movies in Korea. Movie theaters are their greatest source of entertainment. It would never occur to them to destroy it. They don’t ruin a movie with reviews. The greatest inspiration for Korean cinema comes from its people. I just pointed it out. So what’s wrong?

How can you argue that you need to study film academically in order to review a film?

No film director would ever tell an audience to study a film academically before criticizing it. Superstars Mohan Lal and Anjali Menon got it right. They didn’t criticize or taunt the audience. Anjali Menon has made some great movies in Malayalam and she is right. The pace of the narrative is determined by the director. Alphonse Puthren is a well-known Indian filmmaker. If Messi’s game is not good, you criticize his game not his character.

It is said that failure often leads to such outbursts in filmmakers…

From “Udayananu Tharam” to “Saturday Night”, I did 12 films. This failed 3 times. The rest were either hits or blockbusters. “Casanova,” “Saturday Night,” and “School Bus” all flopped. When The Notebook was released, some people said the movie would fail. But the audience took it. I can’t predict the success of a movie. If so, I’d make my own movie wouldn’t I? I want to be called someone who has made different experimental films. I hope to continue to do so. I’m a guy from a very normal family and had to work a lot to get into the cinema. I will continue to do the movies I love again. Making movies that I personally enjoy watching. I’m confident I’ll find a producer or actor for this. Let those who criticize continue to do so.

Have you ever been audited for money?

When my film ‘Bombay Police’ was released, a critic made Rs 25,000 from my producer. He threatened that if the money was not paid, he would reveal the fact that Prithviraj was gay in the film. I only found out about this very late. When “How old are you” was released, the same person asked for money. Even the Malayalam channel revealed the climax of “Mumbai Police” on the first day. I called the main person in charge of that channel. He replied that even he had to relay his show.
