Qatar’s foreign minister says humanitarian aid should be independent of any political progress
Pakistan and Qatar on Thursday called on the international community not to provide humanitarian aid to Afghanistan on the condition of political development under the leadership of the new Taliban government.
“In order to save the lives and people of Afghanistan, there should be no strings attached,” Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmoud Qureshi and Qatar Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdullahman Al Sani said at a press conference in Islamabad.
Qureshi said that the whole world is paying attention to the actions of the new Taliban political organization to see if they have fulfilled their commitments on key issues including human rights.
“If you are not ready for immediate financial assistance or development, that’s great…but don’t take measures that will cause the collapse of Afghanistan’s economy,” he added.

He said that although the political landscape is changing, Afghans should be supported.
Pakistan and Qatar are considered to be the two countries with the greatest influence on the Taliban.

Qureshi also called for the unfreezing of foreign assets in Afghanistan.
Most of the assets of the Central Bank of Afghanistan are held abroad. A US official once stated that any central bank assets owned by the Afghan government in the US will not be provided to the Taliban.
“Frozen assets, unfreeze them, and let the Afghan people use their money for the welfare of their people,” Qureshi said.
